These data were culled from an 80-question survey given to the members of the Massachusetts Association of Reflexology, a 501c6 professional organization in fall 2015, representing approximately 60 practitioners. We heard from approximately 30 unique members giving us about a 50% return.

 

According to the results:

 

-96% are female, current age 56, practicing professionally for 10 yrs.

 

-35% have Bachelor degrees, 28% have Master’s degrees, 7% PhD, 10% RN

​

-Average # of hours of initial reflexology training: 240

​

-Average # of additional hours in reflexology professional development and continuing education hours: 350+

​

-46% are certified by either the American Reflexology Certification Board (ARCB) or the Reflexology Certification Board (RCB) each with a 200hr minimum for certification

​

-86% carry liability insurance

​

-76% of are a professional member of Reflexology Association of America (RAA)

​

-86%, maintain professional memberships in state and national organizations -MAR and RAA- for legitimacy and recognition of professional standing to be informed of the issues impacting Reflexology throughout the state, national and international arenas (80%) and for continuing education (89%) among the primary motivators.

​

-80% work out of a private studio space either as an adjunct to their home or a commercial space; another 30% also work in a shared space, primarily within a multi-disciplinary wellness practice with Massage therapists, Acupuncturists and Chiropractors

​

-74% of those spaces are in the suburbs and 20% in an urban environment

​

-50% work in two or more municipalities.

-60% offer mobile services,

​

-56% go to client’s homes,

​

-20% working in Hospice, corporate and health fairs

​

-The professional MAR member works part time, approximately 20 hours per week seeing 3-9 clients per week.

​

-Average session length is approximately 65 minutes

​

-Average fee per 60 minutes is $66

-85% of clients are procured through client referral, 77% through professional referral and 50% from community outreach, health fairs, volunteering.
